Speed demons were around before the advent of e-bikes, and here’s proof: a fully-faired six speed bicycle with aerodynamic wheels and a trunk fairing that was sold in 1989 as the Hutch Superbike:
“How fast? Fast enough that the average Joe could technically get a speeding ticket while blasting down the highways and byways of urban America. The SUPERBIKE by Hutch is the most innovative bike to come along in decades. Featuring a full-fairing for minimum wind resistance, and six gears for maximum speed. From downhilling, to F-1’s, to a friendly race with your local bike club, the SUPERBIKE can win races for you. Because of it’s limited nature, and quality workmanship, the SUPERBIKE is a limited edition product. Race on down to your Hutch dealer and find out the solution to staying ahead of the pack – once and for all! Oh, one more thing – on the way home, avoid the radar!”
The bike was on sale in the late 1980s for just $299 ($599 in 2016 dollars, inflation-adjusted), and was capable of hitting speeds above 45MPH (we assume this was on flat ground).
