During King Willem-Alexander’s visit to the grand opening of Gazelle’s new Innovation and Production Center, the King of the Netherlands didn’t want to simply shake hands and pose for photographs – he wanted to hop on an electric bike!
The bike ridden by the King was a Gazelle concept that represents the company’s vision of the electric bike of the future, sporting an angular carbon fiber frame designed by storied automotive designers Italdesign Giugiaro. The Giugiaro-designed Gazelle bike was hinted at before last year’s Eurobike tradeshow, but the King’s visit appears to have been the first time that images of the bike have been made public.
A visit to Royal Dutch Gazelle from the King of the Netherlands comes as no surprise: Gazelle was awarded the Royal Seal of Approval by Princess Margriet in 1992, and King Willem Alexander’s grandparents are said to have ridden a Gazelle tandem bike in the 1930s.
